Like the rest of the family she went into service and it was whilst she was working on a farm at Grindale near Bridlington that she met her husband,
HARRY PLEDGER, who was a Waggoner on a nearby farm. Harry was born on the 19th September 1892 at Hunmanby. They were married in Scarborough on 1st December 1917. After they were married, Harry obtained employment at Cayton, travelling with a threshing machine and they lived in a cottage (now demolished) near to the Star Inn.   They eventually moved to 1 and then 4 Burton Terrace, Cayton,  (now 47 Main Street).

They had no children of their own but from July 1937 they brought up Roy (Cowton), who was 2 years old, and who was the son of Violet’s sister, Dorothy. They brought Roy up as their own child and he took their name of Pledger.
