George Cowton was baptised at Hunmanby on the 12th September 1802 (IGI), the first child of Francis Cowton and Mary (Appleby).
George was married at Hunmanby on the 9th January 1830 to Jane (Smith).  (IGI).
In 1841 (census) George, aged 38 was living in Bridlington Street, Hunmanby, with Jane and their three children:-
Mary Ann
baptised at Hunmanby on the 8th January 1832 (IGI)
Hannah
baptised at Hunmanby on the 23rd July 1836 (IGI)
Robert
born at Hunmanby c1840.  (Robert is shown on IGI as being baptised at Hunmanby 23.5.1851 – a possible mistake?).
Another daughter, ELIZABETH, baptised at Hunmanby on the 4th April 1834 (IGI) was living with George’s half sister, Alice Moor (nee Ellis), in Stonegate, Hunmanby. George was described as a Brewer’s Journeyman.
In 1851 (census) George, now 48, was a farmer of 225 acres, employing 4 men, at Great Kelk near Driffield. By this time he was a widower.  Living with him were his mother Mary, now 75, and his children, Elizabeth (19); Hannah (14) & Robert (12). Also visiting at that time were his brother Francis (37) and his half sister Alice Moor (58).
In 1861 (census) George was still at Great Kelk ‘Farm House’. Living with him were his son Robert (22) and Robert’s wife Harriet Ann (27)(born at Scalby, near Scarborough).
In 1871 George was retired, but still living at ‘Cowton Farm on the east’ at Great Kelk. Son Robert was now head of the family, consisting of his second wife Fanny (23) (born at Kelk)(Presumably Harriet Ann had died) and the following four children:-
Jane
born at Kelk c1862. (presumably Harriet Ann’s daughter)
William
born at Kelk c1868.
Emily H
born at Kelk c1869.
Kate N
born at Kelk c1870.
In 1881 the family had moved to Wold Farm at Ganton, where Robert, again  widowed, was a farmer of 400 acres, employing 4 men and 2 boys. Father George, now 78, was still living with him, together with Jane (19);  Emily  H  (12);  Kate  N  (10) and:-
Fanny E
born at Kelk c1874.
Charles R
born at Kelk c1876.
The family were no longer at Ganton in 1891 and nothing more is known of them.
