He joined the Royal Navy and worked on minesweepers until the end of the second world war, and was a stoker 1st class.
H.M.Lightfoot was the last ship he was on, mainly round Gibralter.
After the war he went back to working for the brewery which later became Moor and Robsons and later Bass.
He also worked at the Scarborough Spa as a barman,and as a barman at several public houses in the area.
