On 13th June 1871, whilst John was working as a Police Constable in Scarborough Borough Police, he married SARAH ANN ENGLAND, who was 24 years of age, at St Mary’s, Scarborough. Unfortunately Sarah Ann died two years later in 1873.

In 1874 John married for a second time, again at Scarborough. His second wife was called BETSY (born 1847). Their daughter, MINNIE, was christened at St. Mary's Church on 13th October 1875, but sadly was also buried there on 28th October of the same year.

John and Betsy moved to the East Riding of Yorkshire in 1880 when John joined the East Riding Constabulary, living in the Hull area.  John served in various places and died aged just 50 years old on 19th February 1899 whilst serving at Kirkella, (a year after Betsy died and a year before his father died).
