When Irene left school at the age of 15, she worked as a shop assistant at Jack Ward’s Fruit Shop in Falsgrave before moving on to Quarton’s in St Nicholas Streeet and then Jacques Pork Butchers in Victoria Road. In 1961 she went back to work for Jack Ward after his wife (Catherine Terresa nee Morritt) died. On the 21st February 1962, Irene and Jack (born 2nd March 1918 in Scarborough) were married at Scarborough Register Office and Irene gained a step-son, David. |

In 1964, Jack sold his shop and they lived in Hornsea for a year during which time they helped Jack’s brother in law to run a hotel there. They returned to Scarborough in 1964 and Irene was manageress of Quarton’s in Westborough for 15 years. After that she worked at Mores in Huntriss Row for 11 years until she retired in 1993. After living in Whin Bank in Scarborough they moved to Leighton Close and then to Crab Lane at Crossgates. |
