ALFRED COWTON |
---|
Alfred Cowton was born on the 8th December 1880, the 7th child of Francis & Sarah Cowton. |
---|
He was baptised at Hunmanby church on the 4th January 1881 and in the 1881 census for Hunmanby - April - he was shown as being 4 months old. |
---|
When his father and mother died Alfred apparently went to live with his Uncle Mark in Leeds - 1891 census shows him at 32 Cheltenham Road, Armley, Leeds 12. |
---|
He was back in Hunmanby at Graffitoe Farm for the 1901 census. |
---|
He later emigrated to Canada and then returned to UK with The Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in 1917. (Alfred enlisted in the 249th Battalion C.O.E.F at Regina Saskatchewan 5.2.1917). He gave his date of birth as 8.12.1882 (this must be wrong - he probably wasn't sure of the year). Alfred was demobbed on the 2nd June 1919. It is not known whether he returned to Canada or not. (Interestingly his service record shows his next of kin - Mark with totally new address of 8 St Marks Terrace, Pasture Road, Goole, which would indicate that Mark and Ada moved from Seamer between 1917 and 1919) |
